Definitions
Here are some practical definitions that I hope will clarify this topic for you. Of course, you can always visit www.Wikipedia.com for much more thorough information.
Social Computing
I use this term to speak about social media and social networking together. These terms were, I believe, coined by Forrester Research c. 2006
Social Media
Technology integrating social interaction with text, video, audio. Umbrella term that includes: groups, forums, blogs, IM, media creating and sharing. In common use, this term may include Social Networking.
Social networking
Using software to build online social networks, e.g. Facebook, Myspace, LinkedIn.
Groundswell (Forrester c.2008 ) in a book by the same name, the Groundswell explains how connected people are shifting balance of power in business.
Examples of Groundswell:
- branding is threatened
- marketing is moving online
- retail distribution is moving to new models, such as eBay
- collaboration is being done en masse, through new tools such as wiki’s
- news is moving from print and TV, to online capabilities where the readers aggregate the news themselves (e.g. digg.com, Google News, etc)
- traditional media is moving into new online capabilities such as Youtube, Bit Torrent
Web2.0 (O’Reilly Media c. 2004)
This is the business revolution due to the move to the web as a platform to enhance creativity, info sharing, and collaboration via communities and hosted services
Web 3.0 refers to the future wave of internet innovation
Enterprise2.0 is the adaptation of web2.0 to the enterprise. This implies special challenges for business such as security, privacy and integration of services.
